5 Easy Ways to Organize Your Kitchen
Sometimes the functionality of your kitchen has nothing to do with the actual hardware; it has to do with organization. Kitchen remodeling can be done without moving major appliances or even dramatically changing a kitchen’s “look” at all. You will find that even minor adjustments can make for major home improvements, taking your kitchen’s organization from cluttered and overwhelming to open and inviting.
5 Organization Steps
Step 1: Clear off the counters. Counters should only hold things your family use every day. If they are cluttered with bulky and unused appliances and last week’s mail, it’s time to clean and arrange. Find a new place to keep the toasters, blenders and crockpots. There is no reason they should be kept on the counter year round and are only adding to the feeling of clutter. Keep these in a cabinet and take them out when needed. This is a more convenient and functional use of your counters and cabinets space. If the countertops have become a catchall for mail and papers, designate a new place to put these. Try installing a staggered file holder on the wall in your laundry room, office or near the front door that is designated for random papers and mail.
Step 2: Set up a message center. This is a quick and easy kitchen remodeling project. All you have to do is install a piece of corkboard on the inside door of a cabinet. Now you can pin up a pad of paper, coupons, and other materials you may need quick access to. This will stop the need to search through desk drawers or cluttered counter spaces for paper and a pen to take a message or make out a shopping list.
Step 3: Hang a rack on the inside of your cupboard doors. This shallow rack is perfect for small items like spice jars. It will make use of wasted space. Just be sure that you will still have enough room to completely close your cabinet doors before you permanently attach the rack to the door. If you need help hanging racks or shelves this is a quick job for your Cincinnati handyman and can be done within a couple hours.
Step 4: Reorganize the big drawers. A wide kitchen drawer being used to hold small objects can easily be turned into a place your family throws anything they don’t know where else to put. These are commonly called “junk drawers”. Use compartments or drawer dividers to arrange these in a more useful fashion. This not only allows you to fit more and find things easier but also stops small items from rolling around every time you open and shut the drawer.
Step 5: Organize your freezer space. It can be easy to lose things in a freezer, especially when everyone just “shoves and slams”—shoves things in and slams the door. Make use of plastic bins to organize bags of veggies and fruit. Designate shelves for different food items such as a “frozen meat shelf”. If you find your freezer is over flowing you may need to buy a separate freezer to keep in the garage or basement.
These quick fixes will only take a couple days to complete, even less time if you hire a kitchen remodeler to assist you, making a world of difference in your home.
